10 Gb/s Ethernet over multimode fiber

چکیده

A vast majority of the installed fiber connections in the enterprise data centers consists of veryshort-reach legacy fiber cable connections, with 62.5 μm fiber core diameter. This multimode fiber, originally installed for Fiber Optic Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) applications, is capable of handling 1-2 Gb/s. It becomes a problem at 10 Gb/s, where differential mode dispersion leads into distorted signals, and unclear and incomplete data transmission. Replacing the fiber with single-mode fiber or higher-performance multimode fiber with 50 μm core diameter is generally not a favored solution, since it requires expensive fiber assembly work and may cause major changes in other network hardware, as well.

Design of Optical Access Systems using Computer Modeling

We present numerical techniques that allow efficient modeling of the transport of broadband services over fiber-optic links in access networks using various technologies. Application examples of Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC), Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) systems and 10-Gb/s Ethernet transport over multimode fiber are provided to demonstrate the value of simulation during the R&D and deployment phases of pr...

Toward Terabit-per-Second Capacities Over Multimode Fiber Links Using SCM/WDM Techniques

This paper outlines the progress made on the use of subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) for high-speed datacommunications links over multimode fiber. Results include the demonstration of penalty-free transmission of 2.5 Gb/s data over worst case multimode fiber (MMF). A complete link demonstration of an SCM transmission system is reported, based on a quadrature phase-shift keying modulator and demodu...

Performance of Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation in 10 Gb/s Transmission Systems with Polymer Optical Fiber

Rapid increase of data traffic in data communication applications has pushed the demand for high-capacity and low-cost optical networks for use in local area networks (LAN), such as enterprise or datacenter backbones [1,2]. The use of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) in such cases will often require a new installation, because the commonly used CAT-5 copper cables are unsuitable for 10GbE transmissi...

The importance of modal bandwidth in Gigabit Ethernet systems

W ith the advent of Gigabit Ethernet Systems utilizing multimode fiber, the limiting factor in the fiber backbone is no longer the attenuation of the passive link, but rather, the bandwidth of the fiber. Due to different signal characteristics of the transmitter, new test procedures and a new understanding of the interaction between the optical fiber and the optical signal are required. Gigabit...

Integrated Transversal Equalizers in High-Speed Fiber-Optic Systems

Intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by intermodal dispersion in multimode fibers is the major limiting factor in the achievable data rate or transmission distance in high-speed multimode fiber-optic links for local area networks applications. Compared with optical-domain and other electrical-domain dispersion compensation methods, equalization with transversal filters based on distributed cir...
